In every society, leadership manifests in three fundamental forms: earned leadership, appointed leadership, and legally conferred leadership. While appointed or legally recognized leadership depends on institutional structures and political provisions, earned leadership goes beyond titles. It is built on influence, integrity, and impact.
What is currently unfolding within the Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is a clear example of earned leadership. It is a natural outcome of respect developed over time through service, excellence, and trust. For many members of the APC in Ondo State, Hon. Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo (BTO), the Honourable Minister of Interior, perfectly represents that reality.
It must be clearly stated that BTO has never, at any point, declared himself as the leader of the APC in Ondo State. Structurally and constitutionally, the leader of the party in the state remains the sitting governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa. However, by the strength of his influence, intellect, humility, and the goodwill he commands among party faithful, BTO has earned a position of honor and respect within the party.
Before his appointment as Minister, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo distinguished himself as the representative of Akoko North East/Akoko North West Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, where he recorded unprecedented achievements. His outstanding performance earned him a historic re-election, making him the first lawmaker from the constituency to be re-elected for a second term. That feat alone speaks volumes about the trust, love, and confidence the people have in his leadership.
During his tenure in the House of Representatives, BTO initiated and executed numerous people-oriented projects that touched lives across his constituency. From rural electrification and road rehabilitation to healthcare support, educational empowerment, and youth-focused training programs, his record remains a reference point in quality representation.
He also facilitated employment opportunities for many young Nigerians in federal agencies and ministries, demonstrating that representation is not just about advocacy but about impact. His accessibility, compassion, and responsiveness to the needs of his people set a new benchmark for what true service should look like.
In his current role as Minister of Interior, Hon. Tunji-Ojo has further justified the confidence reposed in him by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. His bold reforms have transformed the ministry into a model of efficiency and transparency. Under his watch, passport processing timelines have been reduced drastically, service delivery within the Nigeria Immigration Service has improved, and morale among personnel in the paramilitary agencies has been boosted.
His emphasis on innovation, accountability, and technology-driven systems has earned him national admiration. From improving operations in correctional centers to initiating forward-thinking policies that strengthen internal security and border management, BTO has displayed remarkable administrative competence and visionary leadership. These accomplishments have broadened his support base, earning him followers and respect far beyond Ondo State.
It is also important to emphasize that Hon. Tunji-Ojo remains a loyal and disciplined party man. He has never, either openly or indirectly, disrespected the constituted leadership of Ondo State. He understands hierarchy, values structure, and continues to place the collective interest of the party above personal ambition.
Instead of engaging in political distractions or rivalry, BTO has chosen the higher path of focusing on national development and service delivery. His calmness and maturity in the face of unnecessary provocations show that he understands that leadership is not about holding titles but about earning influence through consistent performance and integrity.
As internal conversations continue within the Ondo APC, members and stakeholders must recognize that leadership by merit should never be misinterpreted. The respect accorded to BTO by party members is not rebellion against authority. It is a natural expression of admiration for competence, humility, and character.
