If Leadership Must Truly Serve the People, Then Ondo State Needs BTO - By Otunba Femi Balogun

There are leaders people tolerate, and there are leaders people naturally and organically follow and believe in.

The difference is always clear.

One survives on political titles. The other survives on public confidence.

In Ondo State today, Hon. Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has steadily built the kind of political relevance that cannot be manufactured through title alone. His growing acceptance among the people is not happening because of mere political visibility or office occupied; it is happening because many people have genuinely seen capacity, energy, and direction in his leadership journey.

For years, Ondo people have desired a government that thinks beyond routine governance. A government that understands modern realities. A government that can compete intellectually, economically, and politically with leading states across Nigeria.

That desire is exactly why BTO’s name continues to gain unusual momentum across different corners of the state.

To many young people, he represents possibility.

To many professionals, he represents competence.

To many grassroots supporters, he represents accessibility.

And to many political observers, he represents a leadership culture that appears prepared for the future rather than trapped in the past.

What makes his rising influence unique is that it was not built through noise alone. It has been strengthened by visible performance and strategic impact.

As Minister of Interior, BTO entered one of Nigeria’s most sensitive ministries and immediately projected urgency, innovation, and administrative coordination. In a system where excuses are often more common than results, his approach stood out differently. Nigerians began to see a public official willing to confront challenges directly while pursuing reforms aggressively.

It is worth recalling that recently, the Federal Government announced that Nigeria now has the capacity to produce up to 10,000 passports per hour, following major reforms and the establishment of a world-class centralized passport personalization centre in Abuja by the Ministry of Interior under Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

Beyond his official responsibilities, his influence has also been reflected in a series of people-centered interventions that continue to impact ordinary lives. These include facilitating employment opportunities for Ondo youths, empowering women, and supporting families through the distribution of food items during festive periods. More recently, his gesture of providing rams to Muslim families during the Ileya festival further highlights his commitment to inclusive engagement and ensuring that the spirit of celebration is shared across communities irrespective of status.

For many people in Ondo State, that performance created something important: Hope.

The hope that competence can still exist in government.

The hope that younger leaders can handle serious responsibilities effectively.

The hope that governance can actually produce measurable results.

But perhaps even more important is the fact that his rise has not disconnected him from ordinary people.

In many political circles, influence often creates distance between leaders and the grassroots. Yet BTO continues to maintain a strong emotional and political connection with communities, youths, and supporters across Ondo State. His interactions still carry familiarity rather than political arrogance.

That connection matters deeply.

People naturally gravitate toward leaders who make them feel remembered, included, and represented. This is one of the reasons his popularity continues to expand organically among students, artisans, professionals, market women, and grassroots mobilizers.

There is also a growing feeling among many Ondo residents that the state cannot continue operating with old political methods while expecting modern development outcomes.

The challenges facing the state require leadership with speed, exposure, coordination, innovation, and strong national relevance.

The Ondo State people believe BTO possesses those qualities.

They believe his exposure at the federal level has positioned him to understand governance beyond local politics alone. They believe his administrative experience has equipped him with the discipline required to manage complex systems. They believe his national relationships and political influence can attract stronger opportunities and visibility for Ondo State.

Most importantly, they believe he carries the energy needed to drive a more ambitious development vision for the Sunshine State.

This is why conversations around BTO continue to grow louder despite the absence of aggressive personal political campaigns. His name keeps appearing because many people already see him as part of the future they desire for Ondo State.

Not because he shouts the loudest.

Not because he occupies the highest office in the state.

But because many believe he has shown signs of leadership readiness through action, performance, and public engagement.

Ultimately, societies move forward when they identify leaders capable of inspiring confidence across generations. Leaders who understand both governance and people. Leaders who can combine intellect with grassroots connection. Leaders who can transform public trust into meaningful progress.

For a growing number of people across Ondo State, BTO increasingly fits that description.

And that is why many believe the future of Ondo State require the kind of leadership he represents.
