Insecurity: Interior Minister Tunji-Ojo affirms Nigeria's preparedness to confront challenges

Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has reaffirmed the nation’s readiness to confront emerging security challenges, stating that the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is fully committed to strengthening internal security architecture across the country. The Minister made the statement during an unscheduled visit to the Federal Capital Territory Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Federal Fire Service station in Wuse, Abuja, where he conducted a comprehensive assessment of facilities, personnel readiness, and ongoing projects.

Tunji-Ojo noted that President Tinubu has issued a clear directive for agencies under the Ministry of Interior to be properly positioned for effective, responsive and professional service delivery. According to him, the government is not only aware of the nation’s security needs but is actively investing in the tools, training and structures required to address them. He expressed satisfaction with the level of work at the NSCDC’s FCT training ground, describing continuous training and capacity building as essential elements in the fight against insecurity. He emphasized that a well-trained workforce remains central to sustaining safety, peace and public confidence across the country.

However, the Minister expressed displeasure over the condition of the Federal Fire Service station in Wuse. He highlighted several issues requiring urgent attention and assured that the concerns identified during the visit would be thoroughly addressed by the leadership of the Service. He stressed that Nigerians deserve a fully functional and efficient emergency response system that meets modern standards.

Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the Federal Government’s support for paramilitary agencies and urged their personnel to uphold professionalism, discipline and respect for the rights of citizens while carrying out their duties. He explained that similar unannounced assessments would continue nationwide to ensure that agencies consistently deliver services that meet acceptable standards.

Over time, Dr. Tunji-Ojo’s leadership approach in the Interior Ministry has received commendation for its emphasis on accountability, operational efficiency and timely intervention. His efforts have contributed to a more coordinated push toward improving internal security management, along with notable achievements in immigration reforms, improved passport turnaround time and ongoing correctional reforms. These initiatives align with the administration’s commitment to strengthening institutions and renewing the hope of the masses in the capacity of government services.

You would recall that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, during his national address at the 65th Independence anniversary, singled out the Ministry of Interior as a shining example of productivity and innovation under the Renewed Hope Agenda, citing the ministry’s reforms in passport issuance.

Reacting to the news, Pastor Olumide Obadele, National Coordinator of the Progressives Network for Tinubu (PNT), described Dr. Tunji-Ojo as a dedicated and results-driven leader whose hands-on approach to governance and commitment to institutional efficiency has become an asset to national development. Pastor Obadele noted that the Minister’s proactive supervision of agencies under his watch demonstrates both accountability and a vision for sustainable internal security management.
