NDDC To Begin N50,000 Monthly Stipend For 10,000 Selected Youth Interns By December

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has announced the commencement of a significant initiative aimed at empowering youth fr1om the Niger Delta region. Beginning in December 2024, 10,000 selected beneficiaries of the NDDC's Youth Internship Scheme will receive a monthly stipend of N50,000. This program is designed to provide young Nigerians with practical skills and valuable work experience, addressing the pressing issue of youth unemployment in the Niger Delta.

During a recent ceremony, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the Managing Director of the NDDC, made this announcement while being honored as an Ambassador Extraordinaire by the University of Ibadan. The event, held at the NDDC headquarters in Port Harcourt, was attended by a delegation led by Prof. Kayode Adebowale, the Vice Chancellor of the University.

Dr. Ogbuku elaborated on the significance of the Youth Internship Scheme, which was officially launched on August 5, 2024. This initiative attracted more than three million applications from enthusiastic youths eager to gain practical experience. As beneficiaries await the formal announcement of selected participants, they are set to embark on a year-long internship program designed to enhance their skill sets and employability in an increasingly competitive job market.

In addition to the stipend, the NDDC is implementing the Holistic Opportunity Projects of Engagement (HOPE) initiative. This program aims to identify and cultivate the interests and skills of Niger Delta youths. By taking this comprehensive approach, the NDDC ensures that participants receive training and are matched with sectors where their abilities can make a meaningful impact.

Recognizing the role of academic institutions in societal development, Dr. Ogbuku urged the University of Ibadan to enhance its research activities. He affirmed the NDDC's commitment to collaborating with universities on research initiatives that address critical social issues, stating, “We are dedicated to funding research and partnering with educational institutions to develop life-saving solutions, including vaccines, to tackle pressing medical and social challenges.”

Reflecting on the honor conferred upon him by the University of Ibadan, Dr. Ogbuku expressed pride in the recognition of the NDDC's contributions to the region. He noted that this acknowledgment signifies a growing appreciation for the commission's efforts in fostering positive change in the Niger Delta. Furthermore, he announced that the NDDC would begin inaugurating several completed projects in early December, underscoring the tangible outcomes of the commission's initiatives.

Dr. Ogbuku also provided insights into a recent corporate governance review conducted by KPMG, a global consultancy firm. This review aimed to enhance the NDDC's internal processes and institutional protocols. He expressed satisfaction with the successful development of a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the NDDC, assuring stakeholders that this framework would foster a strong institutional culture grounded in ethical practices and effective governance.

Prof. Adebowale commended Dr. Ogbuku for his visionary leadership and the transformative projects implemented by the NDDC. He remarked, “Recognizing individuals who have made significant contributions to society is essential, and Dr. Ogbuku truly deserves this honor as we celebrate the 75th anniversary of our university.” He also highlighted the university's prestigious standing in Nigeria and Africa, noting its consistent high ranking in Webometric evaluations and its unique qualification for the Times Higher Education World University ranking in 2016.

Adding to the commendations, Prof. Peter Olapegba, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, praised Dr. Ogbuku's substantial contributions to societal development. He stated, “We believe in celebrating worthy Nigerians and fostering collaborations that will help build a brighter future for our communities.”

In his remarks, Chief Boma Iyaye, Executive Director of Finance and Administration at the NDDC, expressed gratitude to the University of Ibadan delegation for honoring both the commission and its leadership. He assured attendees that the partnership between the NDDC and the University of Ibadan would endure, promoting mutual growth and development.

This internship initiative not only addresses the urgent need for youth empowerment in the Niger Delta but also reinforces the NDDC's commitment to fostering a sustainable future for young Nigerians.
