Urgent Call for Government Intervention to Eradicate Indian Hemp Cultivation and Thuggery in Ogbese Community

The Ogbese community in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State, a once vibrant and peaceful locality, is currently grappling with the alarming consequences of illegal Indian hemp cultivation. This growing menace has triggered widespread social unrest, posed severe economic setbacks, and heightened security concerns among residents.

The illicit cultivation of Indian hemp has led to the destruction of farmlands, including a recent incident where a cocoa farm in Uso was set ablaze, allegedly linked to the illegal activities. Beyond the economic losses, the Ogbese community is plagued by violent confrontations, a breakdown of law and order, and a steady erosion of societal values. These distressing developments have left the community's leaders, elders, and residents in dire need of immediate government intervention.

In a recent development, the Ondo State Police Command arrested three suspects in connection with the attack on members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) while en route to Abuja for their annual convention. The attack, which occurred on Sunday, 23rd February 2024, was reported through a distress call from one of the victims, highlighting the dangerous activities of local thugs in Ayede Ogbese.

The youth of Ayede Ogbese have voiced their concerns, urging the government to take urgent and decisive steps to curb the activities of these notorious thugs and eradicate Indian hemp cultivation. The community demands comprehensive security measures, rehabilitation programs for misguided youths, and economic empowerment initiatives to restore peace and stability.

The time to act is now. Government intervention is paramount to reclaiming Ogbese’s legacy of peace, prosperity, and communal harmony. The voices of the people must be heard, and the necessary actions must be taken to safeguard the future of the community.
