Breaking! Nigeria Mourns As President Tinubu Announces the Passing of Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja

In  a solemn announcement, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, has confirmed the passing of Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, who died on Tuesday night in Lagos after a period of illness. Lt. General Lagbaja, who was 56, leaves behind a legacy of dedication, leadership, and an enduring impact on Nigeria’s defense structure.

Lt. General Lagbaja, born on February 28, 1968, began his military career over three decades ago when he joined the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps on September 19, 1992, as a member of the 39th Regular Course. His progression through the ranks is a testament to his exceptional skill, strategic insight, and deep-seated commitment to the nation's security.

On June 19, 2023, President Tinubu appointed him as Chief of Army Staff, entrusting him with the monumental task of leading Nigeria’s army in a period marked by evolving security challenges. Lt. General Lagbaja quickly brought to bear his extensive experience, ensuring the army's proactive response to threats, maintaining internal stability, and bolstering national defense efforts.

Throughout his career, Lt. General Lagbaja was known for his frontline leadership and strategic vision. He served as a platoon commander in the 93 Battalion and later in the 72 Special Forces Battalion, showcasing early on his remarkable skills in leadership and field operations. His assignments saw him leading troops in several high-stakes internal security operations, including Operation ZAKI in Benue State, Lafiya Dole in Borno, Udoka in Southeast Nigeria, and Operation Forest Sanity across Kaduna and Niger States. Each mission under his command contributed significantly to stabilizing troubled regions and protecting Nigerian citizens.

Lt. General Lagbaja was a distinguished scholar of military studies. As an alumnus of the esteemed U.S. Army War College, he earned a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies, further enhancing his acumen in military leadership and strategic planning. His education and extensive training in both domestic and international military institutions allowed him to introduce new perspectives on tackling Nigeria’s security challenges, helping to fortify the military’s approach to both traditional and asymmetrical warfare.

In addition to his operational achievements, Lt. General Lagbaja was instrumental in fostering discipline, morale, and professionalism within the Nigerian Army. He championed the welfare of his troops, always advocating for their needs and enhancing their training to equip them for complex combat scenarios. His peers and subordinates remember him as a leader who exemplified the values of honor, courage, and resilience.

President Tinubu, in his tribute, praised Lt. General Lagbaja’s contributions as irreplaceable. "Lt. General Lagbaja’s passing is a profound loss for Nigeria. His courage and commitment to our nation’s safety were unwavering, and his memory will inspire future generations of Nigerian soldiers," he stated. The President extended his deepest condolences to Lt. General Lagbaja's beloved wife, Mariya, and their two children, as well as to the entire Nigerian Armed Forces, who have lost a truly distinguished and dedicated leader.

The President has called on the nation to honor Lt. General Lagbaja’s legacy by continuing his mission of security and unity for Nigeria. In a show of respect, flags will be flown at half-mast, and memorial services are expected to be held to honor the late Chief of Army Staff’s life and service.
