3 Dead, Others Missing In Port Harcourt Helicopter Crash

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has announced the tragic loss of three of its employees in a helicopter crash in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The incident occurred on Thursday, October 24, 2024.

In an official statement released by the company’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, it was confirmed that the helicopter, operated by East Winds Aviation, was chartered by NNPCL for official duties. The aircraft, a Sikorsky SK76 with registration number 5NBQG, had departed from the Port Harcourt Military Base (DNPM) en route to the FPSO NUIMS ANTAN oil rig when the crash occurred at around 11:22 a.m.

"There were eight people on board, including six passengers and two crew members. We have sadly recovered three bodies, and efforts are ongoing to locate the remaining individuals," the statement noted.

NNPCL assured the public that relevant authorities, including the Ministry of Aviation, have been notified, and an official investigation into the cause of the crash is underway. Rescue operations are being coordinated, with continuous updates to be provided as more information becomes available.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims during this incredibly difficult time. We remain committed to supporting the ongoing search and rescue efforts," Soneye added.

Similarly, the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, through its spokesperson Odutayo Oluseyi, confirmed that a total of eight individuals were aboard the ill-fated helicopter.
